Destination Swing biog
Paul Hill - jazz guitarist.

Paul began playing guitar at the tender age of 8. He rapidly progressed to the extent that he was able to join an established local rock band by the time he was 15.

Paul's influences were initially Joe Satriani and Steve Vai in the instrumental rock scene but he later became engrossed in the music of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, which led to a directional change into the Jazz world. Paul now regularly performs as a solo Jazz guitarist and has recently switched to the 7 string- an instrument particularly suited to solo performance. In fact he currently plays a guitar made especially for him by his father! Also an examiner for LCM, Paul runs a successful teaching practice in Norfolk where he is a senior lecturer for the Access to Music course in Norwich.

Paul has performed along side Gordon Giltrap, Howard Alden, Juan Martin and Jack Parnell.

Paul has recently published his first instructional method: The Paul Hill Guitar Theory and Technique book.

Jasper Smith - jazz guitarist.

Inspired to take up the instrument during the Punk movement of the 70's, Jasper's later playing influences included rock virtuosos Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore and Jason Becker. A desire to explore the harmonic possibilities of the instrument led to Jasper studying the playing of Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Hank Garland and many other great players. In 1995 Jasper was one the first players to be awarded the new LLCM Teacher's Diploma from the London college of music for whom he is now an examiner. Jasper currently has two pieces in the classical syllabus for the LCM and his suite 'Five Pictures of Norfolk' is due to be published shortly.

In 2001 Jasper's quartet toured for Rural Arts East as part of the East Coast Festival and amongst others he has performed with Digby Fairweather, Diz Dizley and Jack Parnell. In a rock context he has played at Earls Court and the N.E.C for the Radio One road show.

Martin Eaton - Saxophone.

Martin has been playing the saxophone for over thirty years in all kinds of ensembles. After leaving school he joined the Royal Artillery Band where he played every kind of music imaginable from classical to pop. After leaving the army he became a freelance musician playing numerous summer seasons and casual gigs all over the country.

In recent years Martin has played in a variety of small jazz groups in the East of England including festival gigs and many jazz club appearances both as a vocalist and saxophonist. He also teaches woodwind for the Norfolk Music Education service. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the classic standard tunes, rarely needing to use printed music and is a melodic player in the style of Stan Getz, Zoot Sims with a particular love of ballad playing. At present Martin has three main musical projects - ‘The Blue Note Band’ playing jazz from the 50s and the 60s, ‘The Pinewood Saxophone Quartet’ playing widely diverse music and of course ‘Destination Swing’ playing the standard tunes from the last century.
